Our roots
In the 1990s, ECP founder Doug Kimmelman begins leading Goldman Sachs Power Investing, kickstarting his decades long track record in the sector.
ECP founded
Building upon Doug’s previous experience, Energy Capital Partners is founded with the vision of being a market leader in electrification, reliability and decarbonization investing.
ECP acquires hydro platform
In November 2006, ECP acquires FirstLight Power, a portfolio of 15 high-quality power plants, primarily hydro.
ECP forms utility-scale solar developer
In December 2007, ECP creates NextLight Renewable Power, LLC to develop, acquire, own, manage and operate utility-scale solar power plants in the western US.
ECP forms diversified natural gas power platform
From 2010 through 2013, ECP forms EquiPower, a diversified power generation platform of nine primarily natural gas power plants, totalling 4,685 MW.
ECP acquires critical power generator
Odessa is a 1,000 MW combined-cycle natural gas turbine power plant in west Texas that has been critical to maintaining reliable electricity supply during a period of historic heatwaves.
ECP takes private waste management business
In May 2013, ECP acquires EnergySolutions, Inc, a diversified global provider of low-level nuclear waste management and services to government and commercial customers.
ECP acquires waste-to-energy platform
Wheelabrator, a leader in the safe and environmentally sustainable conversion of municipal solid waste and other renewable waste fuels into clean energy, is carved out of Waste Management by ECP in December 2014.
ECP acquires wind & storage operator & developer
Terra-Gen is an owner, operator and developer of utility-scale renewable and clean energy assets with facilities across the western US. The company has over 9 GW of utility-scale wind, solar, storage and geothermal assets currently in operation or under development.
ECP invests in residential solar
In March 2016, ECP invests in Sunnova Energy Corp, a fast-growing owner and operator of residential solar and storage assets, serving homeowners across the US.
ECP takes private leading natural gas & renewable power platform
In March 2018, ECP closes the $17 billion take-private of Calpine Corporation, one of the largest generators of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources in the US, with a portfolio of 77 power plants accounting for 26,000 MW of generation capacity.
ECP acquires large-scale recycler
Gopher Resource, a recycler of automotive batteries, operates two major recycling facilities in Eagan, MN and Tampa, FL.
ECP acquires energy storage developer
A pure-play developer, owner and operator of energy storage assets in the US and Canada, Convergent Energy & Power Inc, currently has ~259MW of solar and 619 MW / 1,935 MWh of storage operating, in-construction, awarded or contracted projects.
ECP converts coal plants to natural gas
After acquiring Heartland Generation, a portfolio of ten facilities (1,800 MW) providing reliable and affordable energy to customers across Canada, ECP undertakes the conversion of two of its coal plants to natural gas.
ECP begins construction on solar battery and storage project
Construction starts on Terra-Gen’s Edwards & Sanborn solar and energy storage project, an integrated solar-powered battery storage facility that will produce clean energy for more than 158,000 homes and displace more than 307,000 tons of CO2 annually.
ECP acquires beneficial re-use business
In May 2021, ECP acquires Liberty Tire Recycling. Liberty saves more than 190 million tires per year from the nNorth American waste stream, recycling around 1.5 million tons of rubber for innovative, sustainable materials and products.
ECP invests in community solar
ECP acquires Pivot Energy, a national commercial and community solar developer providing community solar to local governments, school districts, non-profits, low-income housing authorities and residential customers.
ECP acquires leading renewable fuels recycler and supplier
Restaurant Technologies, Inc is an industry leading provider of closed-loop oil management solutions to restaurants and food service customers. RTI is the largest independent source of used cooking oil in the US, which represents the most desirable and least carbon intensity feedstock available to the rapidly growing renewable diesel market.
ECP makes investment in energy efficiency
In July 2022, ECP acquires Metrus Energy, an energy efficiency provider that structures capital upgrade projects for customers through innovative pay-for-performance contracts.
ECP forms solar storage development platform
ECP creates New Leaf to acquire and spin off Borrego Solar’s development platform. New Leaf is a leading developer of distributed and utility-scale solar and storage projects in the US.
ECP completes take-private of leading UK waste management platform
In January 2023, ECP completes the take-private of Biffa, the UK’s leading integrated waste and recycling firm, in a £2.1 billion enterprise value transaction.
ECP invests in brownfield conversion of refinery to renewable fuels
ECP invests in Braya Renewable Fuels, which is converting its refinery in Canada to renewable and sustainable aviation fuel operations.
ECP acquires leading utility-scale renewable platform
In December 2023, ECP acquires Triple Oak Power, a utility-scale wind developer aiming to help shape a more diverse, reliable and sustainable power grid.
